Brian O'Connor has been a catalyst for transformative change in the livestock industry and many of his initiatives involved significant personal and professional risk. As a teenager, he worked on farms in Quebec and Switzerland gaining fluency in both official languages and a broadened international perspective. After graduation from the University of Guelph, he spent four years as a Sire Analyst, then eight years as Marketing Manager at Eastern Breeders Inc., developing his ability to identify top tier genetics, establishing embryo marketing channels internationally and launching international cattle auctions, allowing Ontario dairy producers to showcase their genetics to the world. He was also integral to the amalgamation of Western Ontario Breeders and United Breeders to form Gencor.

Brian served roles as Marketing Manager then General Manager of Gencor and was a catalyst for transformative, industry-wide change. Under his leadership, Gencor emerged as a key player in the Semex Alliance, a globally recognized leader in cattle genetics. He spearheaded strategic mergers, developed innovative programs, and constantly sought opportunities to benefit Gencor’s producers, always balancing business growth with integrity and a people first, grassroots approach. At this time, Brian also coordinated subsidized office space at Gencor's head office for 4-H Ontario. As the GM of Gencor until 2011, he responded to the 2004 BSE crisis by creating Gencor Foods to restore cull cow processing capacity in Ontario after the border closure. Then in 2007, he led the charge to purchase Thornloe Cheese in Northern Ontario to prevent its closure. It became a profitable business, earning several national awards for its cheese and butter. In 2008, Gencor brought the Heatime activity monitoring technology to Ontario, making it the first genetics company globally to embrace this technology which is now regarded as the industry's gold standard. Brian also commissioned a study with Dr. Ted Burnside to research the benefits of crossbreeding dairy cattle. Part of this study involved work with Dr Bonnie Mallard testing High Immune response genetics in dairy cattle. This work would lead Semex to develop Immunity+® genetics, producing healthier more profitable cattle for Ontario producers.

At the end of his tenure at Gencor, the final amalgamation of the two remaining AI companies in Ontario (Eastern Breeders and Gencor) occurred, resulting in the creation of EastGen. From 2011-2026, Brian was the General Manager of EastGen where he developed a strong governance model for the Board of Directors, consistent communications with the members and a summer internship program to mentor youth interested in the genetics sector. Always a pioneer, he created EastGen's small ruminant genetic improvement program sourcing genetics from across North America, selling goat semen around the world through Semex and offering value-added genetics for Ontario producers.

His advocacy efforts on behalf of farmers have also been critical; recently he took a lead role in ensuring proposed changes to the Ontario Veterinary Act would not negatively impact farmers. He challenged regulatory overreach and uncovered long term concerns around corporate consolidation in veterinary services.

Brian has been a tireless advocate for youth in agriculture championing EastGen's four annual youth events, supporting 4-H Ontario, creating scholarships to honour the legacy of influential industry leaders and developing the Summer Internship Program.

Brian O'Connor's legacy is a stronger, more unified agricultural sector because of his commitment to innovation, visionary leadership, bold action, and youth. He is a most welcome addition to the Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame.
