Rob Black's contributions to agriculture have been deep and wide and he has had a lasting impact on Ontario's agriculture and food industry and on youth development.
His early career started in the 1980s as OMAFRA's Rural Organization Specialist. He moved from there to apply his skills in other important organizations. When 4-H Ontario had its government staff support withdrawn and became a not-for-profit organization, Rob became its first Executive Director from 2000-2005. There, he instituted some major initiatives which ensured the successful future of this important youth program. He nurtured the Ontario 4-H Foundation and created financial partnerships with several agribusinesses who knew the value of training for rural youth. He built a strong governance framework, and, under his leadership, the organization launched the 4-H Ontario Youth Ambassador program and the 4-H Ontario Arbor Award for volunteers. He took his leadership skills to the Canadian 4-H Council and served as its president from 2011-13 during its centennial anniversary.
In 2006 he became Executive Director of The Centre for Rural Leadership, delivering the Advanced Agricultural Leadership Program. AALP offers a curriculum for aspiring rural leaders, many of whom have gone on to contribute to a wide variety of agricultural organizations. In 2010, Rob played a key role in uniting The Ontario Rural Council and The Centre for Rural Leadership to become the Rural Ontario Institute (ROI) to focus on building vision, voice, and leadership in rural Ontario. He served as the Chief Executive Officer of ROI from 2010-2018.
In 2018, Rob was appointed to the Canadian Senate where he has worked tirelessly on issues of importance to Canada. He has been a strong advocate for agriculture in the Senate and works to educate and inform urban Parliamentarians about the realities and importance of modern agriculture in Canada. He led the initiative to recognize Food Day Canada under Federal Acts so that it is a permanent annual keystone day. As the Chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Agriculture and Forestry from 2022 to 2026, he re-energized the acknowledgement of soil as a critical resource and led the Committee in commissioning an updated study of soil health across Canada. This has resulted in a report tabled in 2024 which serves as a foundation for government and organization policy on soil health protection and conservation. It has reset the dialogue on government support for sustainable practices.
Senator Black has been tireless in supporting Ontario’s agricultural events, think tanks, meetings and tours, attending hundreds of these. Through his work, he has delivered a clear call to action on the need to promote, invest in, and support Ontario and Canadian farms and the larger agricultural sector with responsible government policies.
He has received numerous honours and awards over the years, including:
- Honourary Member (Canadian 4-H Council) 2016
- Top 50 Most Influential People in Agriculture (Canadian Western Agribition) 2021
- Hal Rogers Fellow (Kin Canada Foundation) 2023
- Honourary Life Member (Canadian Society of Soil Science) 2024
- Honourary Professional Agrologist (Ontario Institute of Agrologists) 2025
Rob Black's trail of leadership can be found across the Province of Ontario and Canada, and he is a fitting addition to the Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame.
